Since January I’ve been working on a project whose intention is to be a metaphor for the creative and personal evolutions from one state to another during the period I was being naturalized from an American citizen into a fully fledged German-European. This project is called HINAUSGEHEN.

The word is German for ‘to go out’ or ‘to be exposed’. ‘Über etwas hinausgehen’ means ‘to transcend something’. I chose to follow a 3-movement sonata form to narrate various metamorphoses. While making the first movement I was an American (Exposition), in the second I was stateless (Development), and in the third I became a German citizen (Recapitulation).

The video WESEN will be published this month, with it HINAUSGEHEN, the threepart audio visual composition, is completed. At this time, we will create a own USF-site for this project.

Unter uns Kollegen recorded by Ceven Knowles and Miriam Siebenstädt in the Geräuschkulisse over two hours with no preparation. The goal was to make a complete song within a single session with each track recorded in a maximum of two takes.
This first movement in the series is raw, naked and completely analogue.
The text was inspired by Unter uns Kollegen written by dadaist Kurt Schwitters in 1927.
The video uses unrefined footage taken from a mobile telephone over the course of 2009 in Berlin and Lübeck.

Miriam Siebenstädt und Ceven Knowles spielten Unter uns Kollegen ohne vorherige Proben oder andere Vorbereitungen innerhalb von zwei Stunden in der Geräuschkulisse ein, jeder Track wurde höchstens zweimal aufgemommen.
Dieser erste Satz der audiovisuellen Sonate Hinausgehen bleibt damit etwas Rohes, Nacktes und völlig Analoges.
Der Text der Komposition ist inspiriert vom gleichnamigen Gedicht Kurt Schwitters von 1927.
Das Video basiert auf unbearbeitetem Material, aufgenommen mit einem Mobiltelefon im Laufe des vergangenen Jahres in Berlin und Lübeck.

In Season 4 of Anderecast Helga began producing her own episodes alone. Geräuschkulisse became a finished project and maurus (who later became one of the backbones to Unbekanntes Sektorformat) joined the family. All good things come to an end and as the lives of everyone involved were changing it became clear that it was time to move on beyond the show.

My favourite show is Sauerkraut, Pizza & Underwear (Ceven and Helga) because it is a good example of what anderecast.com was all about: talking about daily life things but by doing that showing the absurdness of it all and breaking open fixed ideas. Everything was possible. Playing with the borders between art and random farce provokes and inspires me. I also liked the contact-encouraging effect, like people that start interacting with us as they passed by coincidence, that went out from us going into the park or an other public space and starting to do our thing. Anderecast was also a nice platform for showing the evolving of the bits of creative life in Berlin as how we live them, like the building and finally opening of the Geräuschkulisse. I enjoyed the most, as in cozy-factor, the recording evenings for the radio show: just randomly talking about stuff that occupies one…

HELGA HOME ALONE

So that is what happens if you leave a beginner home alone with your camera and go on vacation. I got inspired to finish a ‘horror movie’ before Ceven got back home. It was meant as a surprise from his best student…;) Besides filming it all by myself – only for the last scene i had to find a partner in crime – i started to play around with the editing program. It’s not brilliant editing work, it’s just trying out some things and see what’s coming out of it. For that i like it a lot!…and you can see how scary our apartment was when you’re left there all alone! MUHARRRRR! -Helga Jäckel

WELCOME TO HELL!

I got a green screen for my birthday from Helga in 2007. For whatever reason it became very urgent to make a 1950’s B-horror film about going to Hell. Helga and I needed some help in shooting. I knew that maurus did photography so I asked him to help in the production. He ended up making a cameo in the film. -Ceven Knowles

maurus came to help us in later productions. Eventually we found ourselves in a position to evolve, and evolve, and evolve… This particular video was a satire on using sex to sell ordinary things in commercials. Germans refer to body lotion as body milk which in english sounds a bit dirty. I thought to exploit this language difference and created the brand: YOUR. If I would do this again I’d change the name to a more German spelling like: JOR. -Ceven Knowles

Anderecast in his Season 3 graduated to being a real variety show. Our audience grew into the tens of thousands per episode. The show became a full-time (albeit non-paying) job. We went to Rome, got a green screen, documented the building of Geräuschkulisse, hunted Nazis, quoted German literature, sang a hymn, danced disco in animal costumes, watched Sockie become an alcoholic, explored existentialism, and went to Switzerland and Prague.

When Anderecast first started it was a wonderful pastime that turned out to become the biggest project I’ve ever been involved in. I learned how to use a camera, the first steps in editing and acting. Ceven helped me step by step to get into it, also by giving me a camera for my birthday: thank you, best present ever!

The flow of creativity seemed to be endless and while we were sitting in the kitchen drinking wine the ideas for the next shows just jumped at us. As I’m looking at the videos now, lots of nice and emotional memories come to me.

These were definitely some of the best moments in my life!
Thank you Ceven and all the others that took part!

Now he asks to pick one episode… that’s pretty hard!
One that I always liked was The Green Screen. First of all, The Green Screen changed the quality of the videos and second I gave it to him for his birthday… joking apart, I always liked the music Ceven wrote for it and it shows the development of the videos… from that moment on we were able to put the characters wherever we wanted to! In heaven or hell!

While Season 1 was about learning how to put the show together, Anderecast Season 2 was about experimentation with genres. We did a few documentary style pieces, THE MAKING OF FRAU HELGA PART 1, a Messer Chups concert, ADVENT, THE BIOLOGICAL FUNCTION OF HOMOSEXUALITY, and some walking and talking around the city of Berlin. We also started a little series called MICROMINIMAL SEKTORFORMAT in which the video had to be at about 1 minute of something completely simple. Sockie made a second appearance with Madge Weinstein from Yeast Radio, Helga told the story of Sleeping Beauty, and we learned a bit about the declension of the masculine German article in DER STUHL, DIE STÜHLE with special guest Anita Murphy.

TRANNY TALK

A friend of mine, Richard Bluestein has a show called Yeast Radio in which he plays the role of Madge Weinstein a fat middle-aged jewish lesbian. The show has a giant cast of characters I can’t keep up with. On one particular show they were talking about a MTF transsexual who criticised Yeast Radio for “trying to get famous off the backs of trannys”. I thought that was a very funny thing to say and if it could work for Yeast Radio maybe then we might try it that way with Anderecast. I wanted to get a little more attention for the show and this was meant to be someone what of a sarcastic joke.

I had my camera at work and started taping as if it were to be a normal day-in-the-life Anderecast episode. I told Helga to be prepared to make a show when I got home and to just improvise with it. Once there we jumped into new characters and the result is TRANNY TALK. The effort worked and we got quite a bit of attention for it.

On August 3rd, 2006 the Anderecast project was created. It lasted for 4 seasons:

On the 18th of December 2009 anderecast.com will shut down forever and all episodes in both radio and video formats will be granted as public domain free from royalties and copyright restrictions. We hope that you enjoy them.

Anderecast gave birth to Unbekanntes Sektorformat. In commemoration we will feature some highlights from each season over the next four days.

I Want to Be Evil | A Fan Tribute to Eartha Kitt – The Video

Happy Halloween Eartha! In an attempt to draw from the campy humour of the original song it is a tribute to Ms. Kitt, as well to Dario Argento and David Cronenberg in a supernatural, paranoid schizophrenic nightmare-noise-picture with music by NEVEC RED made in february 2009, with Ceven Knowles and Han van Acoleyen in front of the camera and maurus behind.

Happy Halloween, Eartha! Sich dem flirrenden Humor ihres Original-Songs zumindest anzunähern, das wär’s! Ms. Kitt zu Ehren jedenfalls, und dabei auch an Dario Argento und David Cronenberg denkend, geht es hier um ein übernatürliches, paranoid-schizophrenes Albtraum-Klang-Bild mit Musik von NEVEC RED aus dem Februar diesen Jahres, mit Ceven Knowles und Han van Acoleyen vor und maurus hinter der Kamera.

Cm7 – The Video

In the wake of his trusty old video camera’s newfound (and hard earned) physical infirmity, Ceven Knowles along with a borrowed Canon EOS 40D spent the month of August taking over 10,000 photos – at Beetzsee by Brandenburg, on top of the Kreuzberg, in Spreebogenpark, at Marheinekeplatz, on Yorckstraße and at other locations in Berlin.

The result is – in a  laborious abstraction from film reels – a time-lapse animation for Cm7, the second movement of a sonata in C minor written by NEVEC RED in May this year. The starring roll for this music video is relativity.

Cm7 – Das Video

Am Anfang stand die merkliche Altersschwäche von Ceven Knowles guter alter Videokamera. Mit einer geliehenen Canon EOS 40D machte er dann im Laufe des Augusts über 10.000 Fotos – am Beetzsee bei Brandenburg, auf dem Kreuzberg, im Spreebogenpark, am Marheinekeplatz, in der Yorckstraße und einigen anderen Orten in Berlin.

Das Ergebnis ist also – in geduldig aufwändiger Abstraktion der Filmrolle – eine Zeitraffer-Animation für Cm7, dem 2. Satz einer Sonate in C moll, den NEVEC RED im Mai diesen Jahres geschrieben hat. In der Hauptrolle dieses Musikvideos: Relativität.
